What is a Vizsla?

A Vizsla is a red-brown colored breed of dog that is well known for it’s marvelous hunting skills. Magyars first bred them in Hungary in the 9th century, from many dogs with great hunting skills. The dogs used were the Irish and English Setters for pointing. The Bloodhound, German Vorsthound, the Balkan Beagle, the ancient Foxhound, the Pammion Hound and Romanian Copie were used for hunting and scenting. Vizslas are the breed of Hungary, and they are sporting dogs.

Vizsla History

In the 15th century, there was a painting believed to be showing a Vizsla tracking down prey for Hungarian soldiers. Vizslas were only found in Hungary until 1940. Since WWII was going on, many Hungarians fled from Hungary to other European countries, bringing their bright Vizslas with them. Vizslas were not introduced to America until 1950. The first Vizsla reported in the United States was a female dog named Sari. Also in 1950 two men brought 15 Vizslas to the United States. By 1983, 5,000 dogs were registered. Vizslas are famous in Hungary for their tremendous hunting skills. They can track down deer, wild boar, and geese.

Breed Nowadays

Nowadays, people know much more about Vizslas. People really enjoy how they are so cuddly and sweet, even though they are supposed to be called, "Hungarian Hunting dogs". Vizslas nowadays don’t hunt very much, and they make a great companion instead.

Good Facts

You have heard that Vizslas are very cuddly. My dog, Holly, loves to cuddle next to me on my bed while I’m sleeping or reading. Vizslas can get excited easily, so when they get wound up, play with them until they get tired. Vizslas can adapt to wherever you live, so they will be perfect for you. Their regular size for them is medium compared to a Great Dane!

Bad Facts

Vizslas are sporting dogs, so they need a lot of exercise. Since they are not as common as many other dogs, you won’t find as much information on them if you want to adopt one.

Conclusion

I recommend a Vizsla for… you! If you are willing to play with it everyday, and take wonderful care of it. If your family is not home all day, hire a walker, and don’t leave your dog alone very much on weekends! If you are thinking about adopting a Vizsla, there are a lot of breeders that have Vizslas that you can adopt!
